What is UGC? Are User Generated Content Creators the NEXT Social Media Managers?

With the explosion of TikTok, video marketing is more important than ever.  But not just any kind of video marketing. The relatable, feels-like-we’re-on-FaceTime kind of video marketing. You know, the kind filmed on an iPhone. The type of marketing real humans can do, not just paid actors. Which *wink wink*, go follow me on TikTok @selfmadebabe.

Here’s my definition of User Generated Content. Let’s break it down. User Generated Content, or UGC, is content a user creates/generates that helps build brand awareness. Building brand awareness through UGC can occur in many ways. It can be through showcasing the brand’s product, unboxing videos, or by simply talking about why the product is amazing.

User-generated content (UGC) is any form of content such as blogs, reviews, posts, images, video, audio, etc. that have been posted by users on online platforms such as social media, blogs or review sites.

Why should we care about UGC? UGC is authentic content that brands can use to tell their story (and promote their product). User generated content (UGC) is the #1 driver of conversions. What consumers say about a brand online is extremely important; in fact, 84% of people trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation. Influencers are consumers too.

When it comes to user generated content creators there are 3 types. Type 1 — Influencers are the most commonly used type of UGC creator by brands today. Type 2 — Everyday people are the next big thing in the UGC world. Type 3 — Employees within your own organization can also be a part of your UGC strategy.

Brands will need to think about how to best incorporate user generated content into their media mix going forward for both paid and earned media strategies.

UGC in advertising is 20 percent more influential than any other media.

Why is this? Because people don't trust businesses -- they trust people.

The other day I came across a video of a girl on TikTok pitching her new service: Wedding iPhone-ographer. Basically, she’s in charge of getting some behind the scenes footage for your socials via an iPhone. The difference? You’ll be able to post that content immediately versus waiting for your photographer and videographer to make their edits.

As soon as I finished watching her video, I thought “this girl is brilliant”. She immediately had comments rolling in with people wanting to hire her for their weddings.

So, now imagine how marketing your UGC services will go for you. Brands need user generated content and because of this they are willing to PAY creators, or future you.

Here are four reasons why you should become a user-generated content creator:

  1. Build Your Personal Brand: By creating and sharing content online, you can build your personal brand and establish yourself as an expert or thought leader in your industry. By consistently creating valuable content that resonates with your audience, you can gain a loyal following and increase your visibility online.

  2. Enhance Your Skills: Creating user-generated content allows you to hone your skills in areas like writing, photography, video production, and social media marketing. As you create more content, you can experiment with new techniques and strategies, and develop a unique style that sets you apart from others.

  3. Connect With Others: Creating user-generated content provides an opportunity to connect with others who share your interests and passions. Whether it's through social media, online communities, or other platforms, you can engage with like-minded individuals, build relationships, and even collaborate on projects.

  4. Earn Recognition and Rewards: As you create high-quality user-generated content, you may attract the attention of brands, influencers, or other organizations who are interested in partnering with you. This can lead to opportunities for sponsored content, free PR packages, product endorsements, and other rewards, such as your own affiliate link, that can help you monetize your content and turn your passion into a career.
